The ritual of opening doors for others is needlessly complex. What holding a door open for another should be is a show of solidarity, a gesture of pure humanism. It is unfortunate then that we have tagged this simple, helpful show of common courtesy with some unnecessary gender specific rules. The notion that a man should always open a door for a woman is completely, totally, really really silly.
People should just hold doors open for people when they feel like being helpful, that is all there should be to it and anybody's gender should not be considered relevant.
And by the way, if we don't feel like holding a door sometimes, that really should be nothing to scoff at. Sometimes you're just busy, in a hurry, or just feeling lazy.
